How to Remember Names and Help People Remember Yours
In one ear and out the other. I can forget names in seconds because I didn’t pay attention in the first place. How about you?
.
Experts tell us to:
- Pay attention! Focus when you’re introduced.
- Repeat the name out LOUD.
- Decide to remember. Pretend your new acquaintance will give you a new car if you remember her name. (Can you remember Oprah Winfrey?)
- Associate the name with something—the more vivid, the better:
* John – sitting on the porcelain throne or picturesquely leaning over it
* Mary – holding a baby in swaddling clothes
* Ashley – flaming ashes in the lee of a rock
* Tracey – tray + sea
* et cetera* (*what people write when they’re pressed for time or out of examples)
When I’m introduced, I say, “It’s Tracey, as in Dick Tracy or Spencer Tracy. And Bennett, as in the singer Tony Bennett.” This seems to work, and no one has called me Dick or Spencer.
I’m not sure if remembering names gives me confidence. But when I forget, I sweat. Racking my brain, I lose track of the conversation.

How many people share your name?
Have you been dunned for a bill that wasn’t yours, but it had your name on it? I have. It was easy to refute because it was a phone bill from Maui, and I never lived there. I hope you won your case, too.
.
I never met another Tracey Bennett, although there are 105 of us in the US. My closest encounter was a woman whose maiden name was Bennett and who named her daughter Tracey with an E-Y. There are 338 Tracy, 52 Traci, 33 Tracie, 4 Tracee Bennetts, and 103 Harry Potters. I call myself the Queen of Conversation. My friend Greg calls me King. He could call me Tootie Frootie and spark a smile.
.
But do not call me Trixie. I am NOT HOME for Trixie. (Faint apologies to all you Trixies out there.)
.
Find out how many people share your name. In the comment section tell your story about name mix-ups.
