My Mother Sat Beside Martin Luther King, Jr.

There’s a whopping big difference between sitting beside Martin Luther King, Jr. and walking beside him. My mom and he sat shoulder to shoulder on an airplane in the 60’s. Did she know who he was? Of course. And I don’t think she was pleased with her seat mate. She was an intelligent, conservative white woman, and he, a committed leader of blacks in turbulent times.

New Year’s Resolutions and Conversation

New Year’s Resolutions are like the weather. Everybody talks about them, but nobody does anything about them. Okay, I exaggerate. A little. I always make a resolution I can keep because it makes me feel good about myself. Here’s a terrific one I make year after year: “I resolve not to make any more resolutions this year.” You’re welcome to borrow it.
